Happy Memorial Day from Sitka . . .

May 27, 2017 – Happy Memorial Day

This week has been a cool, cloudy, and rainy week but today has made it all worthwhile. The sun is out, the temperature is in the mid 60’s, there is very minimal winds, and the peace and serenity of the island is in full force today. The snow, still abundant on high, is melting and soon will be gone.

Beautiful Sunny Day!

But back to earlier in the week . . .sun was not a part of this past week’s attire.  Rain and clouds were everyday occurrences. Not offensive rains, but mild and steady rains. The winds, when they get above 5mph, can make it colder than the temperature. Visitors off the cruises were a little damp and chilly but they kept cherry attitudes for the most part and enjoyed their time here.  Rains brought them inside the Russian Bishop House and our tours were normally full to capacity.  I met many interesting visitors and spent several hours serving tea and visiting with them.

The cruise ship arrives in Centennial Harbor.
Rangers Erin and Kyle serving Russian Tea in front of the Russian Bishop House and trying to keep their hands warm!

Here are the Tenders taking folks back to the ship for their afternoon departure.

Home life has been relaxing with lots (and I repeat LOTS) of continuing embroidery. I think I have now completed 8 sets of pillowcases, 12 drying towels, and multiple handkerchiefs. It makes for quiet and very relaxing evenings. My house mate Amanda  just finished the book The Nightengale by Kristin Hannah. She enjoyed it immensely and her recommendation was a good one. I just purchased on Kindle and will start it tonight!  We are also working a puzzle (thanks to Aunt Jane) that is only 500 pieces but a real doozy to complete.  The pieces are all cut the same and not, I repeat NOT, interlocking.  I think she is trying to get even with me for something!

Love Normal Rockwell
I’ve put together 2000 piece puzzles that were much easier.

Thought you might like to know that Lawn Art lives in Sitka as well. I see this every day on my way to work and marvel.

There must be a story behind this.

May 22 was my twin grandsons 10th birthday. It’s so hard to believe that my youngest ones are now in double digits. They had a great birthday. Here they are dressed up for a Make-a-Wish gala evening and another enjoying their birthday gift from Grammy.

Happy Birthday Luke & Jack. Handsome boys for sure.
Birthday Play.

Daughter Jennifer and Grandson Reid arrive this coming Friday. I am SO excited to see them and show them Sitka. I have scheduled a 4 hour ocean tour to see (hopefully) puffins and whales and sea otters and sea lions. We also have a kayak trip planned and time to visit the Raptor Center and Fortress of the Bears. Mixed in between will be many walks and talks.

Rangers Cindy and Parker. We are Friday evening dinner and drinking buddies. I have really enjoyed getting to know them.

Happy Memorial Day. Enjoy your weekend and take a moment to remember our service men and women.  Thank you to each and every one for your service and for allowing me the opportunity to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Blessings to all,

Mara
